One of the many things that a carpenter uses in the construction of a building or home would be what I am holding here. Does anyone know what it is. That's right, a plumbline. By the use of this, walls are not crooked and by using this, everything is straight in a building. Here is how it is used, boys and girls. You see I hold it by the tip of the string and let the string dangle. This weight on the end is a marker to indicate the exact perpendicular line from where my fingers are. So you see, it is a very useful and necessary item in the carpenter's chest.
A plumbline is not foreign in the Bible, for in Amos 7:7 and B we find these words, "He showed me: behold the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them;"
By the use of a plumb line there is no crooked wall. If the wall is crooked, it is not the fault of the string. Workmen would be foolish to argue with the string.
Now, the Bible is like this string. Psalm 119:11 states, "I have laid up in Thy Word in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee."
Jesus says that we should hide His word in our hearts, store it up, so we might not sin against Him. Now, Jesus is our chief inspector. He is the person who can come and straighten up lives. He is like a plumbline, himself. He changes our lives and straightens us up. Now the Bible is the final line by which we will be judged. John 12:48 says it very clearly:
"He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has a judge; the judge on the last day."
