LISTEN TO A LIFE JACKET
a life preserver
Boys and girls, I want to show you something that is a real necessity when you are going out on the water. See these beautiful life jackets. One is not so new as the others, they have been used by our children and by myself. The use of a life jacket is very important because if you go out fishing or joy riding on the water, you need to take precautions, for even the best of all swimmers at times can get into trouble. I swim quite well, but I always take a life jacket with me when I am going out on the water.
I want to tell you a story about a man who went out on the water, in fact this man started sinking. His name was Peter and the Scripture for today comes from Matthew 14:29 and 30. "He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me."
Peter took his eyes off Jesus, and he started looking to the right and to the left. He felt the water, and he felt the breeze and he suddenly realized that he was in water over his head. He had been walking on the water but now he began sinking into the water. He cried out to Jesus, Jesus reached forth his hand and saved him.
You know, boys and girls, Jesus does this to us. He reaches out His hand, speaking figuratively, He grabs onto us and He saves us. For there are times when life gets hard and we seem to sink. Sometimes in nursery school, elementary school or just playing around, there are times when we feel that we really are beginning to sink. It is at this point that Jesus reaches down, picks us up and saves us. He is like a life preserver. On the back of this life preserver we have written this one word that is really important, the word "salvation." Jesus gives us a life preserver and He will sustain you, and you wont sink in this world. For Jesus will save you.
Boys and girls, next time you see a life preserver, remember a spiritual life preserver is the salvation that Jesus can give you. It was Jesus who really saved a man from drowning and it is the same Jesus that reaches out and holds onto you. Why? Because He loves you. Amen.
