God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).
For we [Christians] are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit and by the Spirit of God and exult and glory and pride ourselves in Jesus Christ, and put no confidence or dependence [on what we are] in the flesh and on outward privileges and physical advantages and external appearances.
Spirit - matter of the heart - change has to occurred. Truth - reality - what is going on in our lives every time, every where. Am I living to please God?
These people draw near Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts hold off and are far away from Me. Uselessly do they worship Me, for they teach as doctrines the commands of men. And Jesus called the people to Him and said to them, Listen and grasp and comprehend this: It is not what goes into the mouth of a man that makes him unclean and defiled, but what comes out of the mouth; this makes a man unclean and defiles [him]. In vain, uselessly. Doesn't produce fruit. Worship must be with a devoted and obedient with reverential fear and awe of God.
By this the Holy Spirit points out that the way into the [true Holy of] Holies is not yet thrown open as long as the former [the outer portion of the] tabernacle remains a recognized institution and is still standing, Worship must have right heart attitude - broken and contrite.
My times are in Your hands; deliver me from the hands of my foes and those who pursue me and persecute me.
My sacrifice [the sacrifice acceptable] to God is a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart [broken down with sorrow for sin and humbly and thoroughly penitent], such, O God, You will not despise. Adam was walking in the Spirit But he sinned - came into flesh with pain.
Adam was in the flesh - can't worship God in flesh. Come back into Spirit - change must occur. Before entering the Holy of Holies, the outward structure must change.
Story of the Alabaster Box - Pure nard - broke jar - poured it on His Head. Are we willing to go to the cross? The cross is the cross of self-denial.
I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains [just one grain; it never becomes more but lives] by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces many others and yields a rich harvest.
